The current state capital of Assam, Guwahati, known in ancient time as Pragjyotishpura or The Eastern City of Light, was the capital of Kamrup which finds frequent mention in the Great Hindu Epic Mahabharata and other Sanskrit volumes and historical lores.

Its major towns are Guwahati, Dhubri, Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Tinssukia, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sivsagar, Silchar, Tezpur. Under the unicameral legislature system, it has 126 seats of legislative assembly. The state is represented in the Lok-Sabha by fourteen members and seven members in the Rajya Sabha.
